The Supper (PC) Review

Finally time for the dice to decide what to play again, and they, as always, pick interesting titles. This would prove no different. But would it turn out to be a good one? Come on in and grab a bite while we talk about it.

Story: Ms. Appleton was a kind old lady who ran the local tavern. Though no one is without their secrets. Hers is the voice who talks to her... tells her what to do. So how's business, Ms. Appleton?

There is little else to say about this story, as there is really little story in total. However what is here is absolutely tight and pulls together beautifully. For those with a taste for the macabre this is a great little snack of a game, and it will take about as much time to play through.

7/10

Graphics: The Supper is a very retro point-and-click title, and looks the part exceedingly well! Everything in this game is lovingly drawn with a pixel-art reminecent of the old days drenched with a gloomy art style that just feels like it's on the edge of creepy. It is a delicate balance of cartoonish goodness that just feels right.

However, this game does cheat some, even as it doesn't care that you notice. Any actual text in the game (like your recipes you will need to create or the conversations with Ms. Appleton) are in full high-def resolution. It isn't jarring or anything. In fact it blends together so well despite this, it's incredibly easy to forget this even as it's right in front of your face. But if someone were to be a bit of purist about this kind of thing, they could nitpick this detail.

But really this is a fantastic looking game.

Sound: Nor is the sound side of this game a slouch either. True, all the sound effects are public domain (as noted in the credits) but the amounted for this short game does not allow this to get in the way. Nor did they choose anything even remotely out of place! Every gulp, squelch, and gurgle is places perfectly and the music (even as it is only 2 songs) is absolutely perfect for the atmosphere of it's moment. This is just a fantastic piece of audio art.

8/10

Gameplay: The Supper is a point-and-click game and this is exactly what you will do. You will guide our dear sweet Ms. Appleton as she handles another night of customers who need to their stomachs filled. Simple things like putting plates of food together or gathering the ingredients for this... although where you will get those will definitely go down much darker paths then this suggests. But in the end, it is a 20-30 minute long game that offers little challenge, focusing instead on the horror of the moment and the story that lead up to it. It's solid, but it's not going to challenge you in any way. Just relax and enjoy then move on.

6/10

Bugs: No bugs in this one... it ran perfectly.

Score: If this were a paid game, it would be a rip off. There is just not enough here to warrant a price tag. But that said, there isn't one, allowing for some leeway as long as what is there is good. And THAT it definitely is. This is the definition of a snack-sized game to play between others... but this one might just stick with you a little while.
