After how much I absolutely loved Curse of Monkey Islands, I was actually looking forward to this game. Well I can at least say it was an eye opener for how fast a franchise can fall. Avoid this one, guys.
Realms of the Haunting (PC) Review
Fresh of the joy of playing Descent as a First Person Friday game for Extra Life, I found myself wanting to continue with another MS-DOS title and immediately thought of this gem. While I was taking on my fellow gamers every week in the PTMC mines, I was playing this one on my own and loving everything about it. I don't think Im giving anything away telling you that, yes, I still loved this game. But at the same time, it wasn't quite what I remembered. Let's talk about it.
The Curse of Monkey Island (PC) Review
It has been a long while since I played a Monkey Island game. In fact the last time I played one, I hadn't even started this website yet. The first two were fun, but the second one left me on a rather confusing note and not entirely sure I should continue. Today, I answer that confusion as the dice called game 3 from the depts of my backlog... and I waited WAY too long for it.
Shadowgate II (PC) Review
I have to admit, I've been lucky so far. Most of the time when I pick up a game, good or bad, I can at least see the people making it loved what they were making. Up until this moment I could point and laugh at the clear examples where this was not the case in the AAA world of gaming and the grilling the team got for their efforts. I knew that at least for what I was playing, the devs loved what they were making, even if they whiffed at doing it. I can't say that this time. This game just feels like modern day slop both in how it plays and how it treats the previous title it claims to be a sequel to.
Thimbleweed Park (PC) Review
This is one of those games that has spent years waiting for it's day in the sun. In fact, it was one of the first games I got when Epic Games started giving away free games every week. But was it worth the wait? Well, I can't say it really was, unfortunately.
Necrophosis (PC) Review
I have been waiting a while for this one. Earlier this year Dragonis Games dropped a demo to show off what they were working on, and I was instantly hooked. So I put the game on my wishlist, eager to get to the main game. Now as the game has been out for a little while, my schedual around game series has opened up to let me pop this into my PC. And while it was shorter and perhaps easier then I would have liked, overall it did not disappoint. Where it mattered, this game delivered.
Beyond Shadowgate (PC) Review
When I was a little kid in the late 80s, my little brother and I, like many other kids, loved playing Nintendo. Enough so that our parents would not only get us a few games once in a while, but even a subscription to the now immortal Nintendo Power magazine. And it is in here we would learn many of the tips and tricks I did actually use to beat several of those games, but for me, it would do something more. Within the first few articles was a guide to find your way through the first part of a little title known as Shadowgate. I read through this guide top to bottom untold amount of times, excited to see the arcane tricks of the castle it wanted to show everyone how to survive. Enough so the game was a birthday gift that year...
I fell in love with this game as both a puzzle game that could be tough as nails and my first taste of horror gaming, and I even learned to speed run it before speedrunning was a thing before putting the cart away forever. But I never forgot the living castle and made a point to play every new entry in the franchise I could get my hands on, and even the 2014 remake. Now, nearly 40 years later, the perfect storm has happened and the original team who wrote the first game got together to make the sequel they were never allowed to way back then. It was worth waiting for. Welcome back to Kal Torlin!
Deponia 3: Goodbye Deponia (PC) Review
And here we are. After a trilogy of titles we have reached the original ending of the Deponia Saga. I will not lie to you and tell you I was a big fan of this, but this is one of those rare cases where the story alone is enough to want to see how it ends... and.. wow... yeah... step inside.
8-Bit Adventures Anthology: Volume 1 (PC) Review
Deponia 2: Chaos on Deponia (PC) Review
It has been a LONG time since I played a Deponia game. Back then I had not yet reached a point of giving series I was in the middle of priority to continue, and to be fair, I'm honestly not 100% sure I would have had I been in those early days. But that did not mean a sequel would be bad... would it? Would it? Well... yes and... no.... kinda... you know what? This time, it actually is kinda complicated.
Demons Never Lie (PC) Review
While I can not say this is the deepest dive into my backlog I have ever seen happen, here we do have a game that's been hanging out there a few years. In this case, it was an already cheap game that intrigued the hell out of me, and was made even cheaper as part of a Halloween sale on steam. Turns out, I found an oddball that wasn't afraid to get dark, but still had real heart and soul behind it. But enough of the puns, come on in.
The Blackwell Epiphany (PC) Review
And here we are at the end of the line with our dynamic ghost-saving heroes' final adventure. I will admit I've been looking forward to seeing how it all turned out, and really I was not disappointed. Come on in and lets talk.
Into the Dangerous World I Leapt (PC) Review
Once again we find ourselves at the end of a game picked to show off for Extra Life, but turned out to be a single sitting game. In this case, we sat down to a class project that looked like it was going to be an intriguing little horror game to play for the Halloween holidays.... I was hopeful since I have played other school project games that not only left me ecstatic, but hyped to see the game read a full release (incidentally since they treated it as an update, that game is back in my backlog now). This time, however, while I can appreciate what was attempted and even achieved, it didn't hit nearly as well.
The Blackwell Deception (PC) Review
And now the initial set is complete. A long ways ago, I bought this as part of a 4-game pack with the 3 preceding titles and as of now, I have finished the pack off. So how was this last entry? Honestly pretty good, if not the best it had to offer. Still come on in and lets talk.
The Shore (PC) Review
This is not a game that waited very long to play. Having picked it up on the Steam Summer sale, I had expected to put it aside for a lot longer. But instead thanks to another weekend game to show off for Extra Life, it jumped the line and I finished it in a single sitting. It's not a long game, but it was a long stream... I just couldn't let it go as I absolutely had a blast the entire time.
Serena (PC) Review
Once again we find ourselves looking over a one-off game shown off for Extra-Life. Designed to be a short atmospheric experience, I wasn't expecting a lot out of it, but I was wrong. What it is meant to do, it is a masterpiece at, and I am REALLY glad I walked into this gut-punch of an experience.
Blackwell Convergence (PC) Review
Today we continue the Blackwell saga, and I have to admit, what started as something I was luke-warm about has over time become a better and better series. So seeing it cycle back to an active game was already a good thing... and then I played it and smiled just that bit more...
The Supper (PC) Review
Finally time for the dice to decide what to play again, and they, as always, pick interesting titles. This would prove no different. But would it turn out to be a good one? Come on in and grab a bite while we talk about it.
Blackwell Unbound (PC) Review
Today we continue with a series of point and click games I've had in my library for a while. And while the first game was admittedly disappointing for everything I had heard, the devs appeared to learn from their mistakes and this is a much better game for it.
To The Moon (PC) Review
This was supposed to be an indie darling, loved by everyone. So when the dice chose it, I was happy to give it a shot. It did not feature controller support on it's store page, but it felt like something a controller would be best for so I was ready to do my usual tricks to make it work... only I didn't need to. Happily surprised to see native, support, I settled into my couch for some much needed relaxation. No, I did not expect a game with much gameplay. After all, that is now why this game is so well loved. But I expected to relax, take in a nice story for a few days, and have a descent time of it. I did not expect a broken mess to ruin the game in such a way that research not only showed fairly common, but blind luck was the only solution to get around it. Unacceptable.
