Fucking Hackers…

While it certainly means less for us here to talk about, I wish stories like this just didn’t happen. This happened during the working day, so no one here at the site knew this was happening until a skype call with a friend of the site pretty much after the fact. A hacker who has been named, but we will not be giving the time of day ran a rampage across the internet gaming world in the name of a vendetta against an individual game streamer.

Starting with LoL, this hacker followed this gamer and DDoS attacking every game he was trying to stream. In the whirlwind, several games were taken down including World of Warcraft, QuakeLIVE, DOTA2, Club Penguin, World of Tanks, at least some Ventrillo channels, Battle.net, and EA,com as they literally followed him from game to game, bragging on their twitter as they shut down each game.

And while this is damaging to businesses in general (and anyone who was with all of us on Nov. 2nd, you already know how I feel about this kind of bullshit), the hackers got personal. They somehow got ahold of the gamer’s address, and send a false emergency call about a hostage situation to the authorities which resulted in a SWAT team arriving at the guy’s house and temporarily arresting him while they searched the place. Certainly makes the pizza deliveries the guy was still receiving when he made his “explanation” video and posted it on youtube. (Although he DID have to leave in the middle to talk to both the police chief and now to the fire chief again.)

Last time I saw a single hacker group pull this kind of bullshit, I was in college and Yahoo chatrooms were the popular thing on the web, but even that never seemed to target someone personally. It was just some random asshole fucking up everyone’s night they could. This is a new low, and while I would hope anyone who would destroy everyone’s night trying to play anything “for the lulz” gets caught and hurt badly enough NOT to do it again.

But to target one person because broadcasting over the web because “money hungry companies”? Seriously? And then to not only target their business (which is the streaming in this case) but to send a fucking SWAT team to their house? This was the act of low-lifes and I can only hope they get what they deserve. The internet and the gaming community’s future demands people like this, who are driven because they can’t stand someone else is successful, be forced out.
